Andreas Kalpakci
Curriculum vitae

Andreas Kalpakci (Mendrisio, 1984) is an architectural historian researching the intersection between architecture, urbanism, and the field of international organizations in the twentieth century. Trained as an architect at Mendrisio's Academy of Architecture and at TU Delft, he undertook postgraduate studies at Yale University as a Fulbright grantee, before completing his SNF-funded doctorate at ETH Zurich with distinction (ETH Medal). His doctoral dissertation Making CIAM: The Organisational Techniques of the Moderns, 1928-1959, examines the key role that this association's paperwork played in the institutionalisation of modernism, and has been accepted for publication by the gta Verlag. As a lecturer at the ETH Zurich Chair of the Theory of Architecture, his current focus is on the Things of Modernity project, researching and teaching courses for Bachelor and Master students on the history of architectural modernism through the lens of its technical objects—from clocks, light bulbs, and gas pipes, to antennas, refrigerators, and solar collectors—while previous collaborations include the ARCH+ feature on Architekturethnografie as editor together with Momoyo Kaijima and Laurent Stalder, and the Architectural Ethnography exhibition at the Japan Pavilion at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale as assistant curator.
