The Veredelung of a magazine: Joseph Gantner at Das Werk (1923–1927)

By examining the fifty-six issues of Das Werk edited between 1923–1927 by the art historian Joseph Gantner this dissertation aims to understand how the magazine made visible fields of tension between different actors and institutions of Swiss modernism.
The evolution of the magazine that occurred under Gantner was reflected in Das Werk’s structure and form, but it most heavily influenced the content, which demonstrated over time richer and more sophisticated visions of Swiss architecture. This dense and often incoherent vision of architecture brought together the architectural profession, the expansion of art history, and contested support for a Swiss national identity.

At the intersection of these three areas, the dissertation seeks to give a cross-reading of the sources and shed new light on the complex relationship between architecture and the print periodical.
